Cairn is a small, independent app. The fastest way to reach a human is email:

Common questions

How do I cancel my subscription?

All Cairn subscriptions are managed by Apple. Open the Settings app on your iPhone → tap your name at the top → SubscriptionsCairnCancel Subscription.

Cancelling takes effect at the end of your current billing period. You keep Premium access until then.

How do I restore a purchase on a new device?

Open Cairn → SettingsRestore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you originally purchased with.

If restoring doesn't unlock Premium, email Gareth@onliware.ie with your Apple ID purchase email and we'll help sort it out.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Visit https://reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Cairn purchase, and request a refund.

We're unable to issue refunds directly because we don't process the payment — Apple does.

Where are my journal entries stored?

Entirely on your iPhone, in Cairn's private app storage. They are never sent to a server, never sync to another device, and only exist on the iPhone you wrote them on. Use Settings → Export entries to take them with you.

How do I export my entries?

Settings → Export entries. Cairn generates a Markdown file containing every entry, which you can save to Files, AirDrop, or email to yourself.

How do I permanently delete everything?

Settings → Delete all entries removes every entry from your iPhone. Deletion is irreversible — Cairn does not maintain a server-side backup because we never see your data.

Why isn't the AI working on my iPhone?

The mood tagging and the weekly, monthly, and yearly synthesis use Apple Intelligence, which is available on iPhone 15 Pro and later, and any iPad or Mac with Apple Silicon.

Check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri on your iPhone — if it's not enabled, turn it on and Cairn will start tagging entries automatically.

If your device doesn't support Apple Intelligence, Cairn still works as a beautiful, simple journal — you just won't see the automatic tags or the synthesis paragraphs.

Why doesn't voice journaling work?

Voice journaling uses Apple's on-device Speech Recognition framework — a separate system from Apple Intelligence, and supported on a wider range of devices.

If the mic button does nothing when pressed: open Settings → Cairn on your iPhone and confirm both Microphone and Speech Recognition are enabled. If either is off, the editor falls silent rather than crashing.

Why doesn't voice notes work on my Apple Watch?

The Watch records the audio and sends it to your paired iPhone for on-device transcription. Make sure:

  • Your iPhone is nearby and unlocked at some point shortly after you send the note
  • Microphone is granted to Cairn in the Watch app on your iPhone (Watch app → Cairn → Privacy)
  • The iPhone has both Microphone and Speech Recognition access for Cairn

If a recording is sent but doesn't appear, Cairn will save a placeholder entry so you know it landed.

Why doesn't the app lock unlock with my iPhone passcode?

By design. The app lock requires the Cairn PIN you set when enabling it — not your device passcode. Falling back to the device passcode would let anyone who can unlock your phone read your journal, which defeats the point. There is no PIN recovery — if you forget it, the only path is to delete the app.

Hours

This is a small independent app — replies typically within 24 hours on weekdays, longer on weekends. We don't operate a 24/7 support desk and would rather be honest about that than fake otherwise.
